Pro-Choice YQL Gender Affirming Healthcare Access Navigator

Pro-Choice Society of Lethbridge & Southern Alberta (Pro-Choice YQL) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Gender Affirming Healthcare Access Navigator. This is an 8 month contract position. The successful candidate will provide direct referrals, access, education and knowledge of gender affirming health care to patients, patient support systems and community members.
Pro-Choice YQL is a charitable non-profit focused on access to sexual and reproductive health care. We believe in the right for every body to access supportive, informed sexual & reproductive health care. Our resources are gender neutral & we work to provide culturally informed health care resources and referrals.
The ideal candidate will be organized, resourceful, and flexible - with a background in or lived experience in gender affirming healthcare navigation. This position requires confidence and comfort in discussing sexual and reproductive health care with patients grounded by the principles of trauma informed, respect and harm reduction.
The Gender Affirming Healthcare Access Navigator will be responsible for:
Working with patients and community members to provide resources, information and referrals for patients seeking gender affirming healthcare;
Creating a gender affirming healthcare access navigation system and manual specific to southern Alberta and rural communities;
Managing a budget for research, outreach and relationship building activities;
Following up on patient and information requests via email, text and social media messages;
Developing relationships with medical providers;
Developing relationships with other organizations providing gender affirming healthcare supports;
Supporting patients by assisting in navigating barriers to access care;
Managing and booking travel/ accommodations/ financial supports for patient care;
Tracking financial support to patients for healthcare access;
Tabling at community and stakeholder events;
Promoting Pro-ChoiceYQL’s public image, and act as a resource for advocacy, information and education in public and community spaces.
We are looking for candidates with:
Capacity to work variable hours when responding to patient inquiries and supporting patient health care access;
Lived experience / work experience / post-secondary education (or a combination of) in Sexual and Reproductive Health Care (SRHC) delivery, gender affirming health care access, 2SLGBTQIA+ community organizing, customer service, communications, social work, and/or reproductive justice;
Lived experience within queer and trans community building;
Experience in social support service navigation ;
Computer skills to produce effective spreadsheets, reports, documents and presentations;
An understanding and comfort with gender affirming healthcare services, STBBIs, harm reduction and trauma centered support.
Comfortable working in health care environments and with healthcare providers;
Comfortable following public health orders;
Strong capacity to work independently and autonomously;
Strong english language skills - written and verbal. Other languages - written and verbal, are an asset but not required;
Interest in continuous skills development and learning;
Strong support for abortion healthcare;
Interested and excited to represent Pro-Choice YQL at public events, festivals, pride events, and conferences;
This is a remote work position: Candidates must typically reside in Southern Alberta, (within a 200 km radius of Lethbridge, Alberta).
Working Conditions:
Working hours are flexible, and will not exceed 20 hours a week;
Pay will be based on hours worked;
This is a remote position - the primary location of work will be the employee’s home;

We have a team based working environment with consensus based models of decision making;
This position will report directly to the Executive Director.

This is a remote work position. Candidates must typically reside in Southern Alberta, (within a 200 km radius of Lethbridge, Alberta).

This position is in part funded by the Houssain Foundations’ Daylight Fund. The successful candidate will staff our access line and provide direct referrals, access, education and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health care to patients.

The Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Navigator will be responsible for:
Staffing the Pro-Choice YQL access line: providing resources, information and referrals for patients seeking sexual, abortion, and reproductive healthcare;
Following up on patient and information requests via email, text and social media messages;
Providing information about abortion healthcare at different stages of pregnancy and care needs;
Providing information about sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBIs);
Developing relationships with medical providers;
Developing relationships with other organizations providing abortion and sexual healthcare supports;
Supporting patients by assisting in navigating barriers to access case;
Managing and booking travel/ accommodations/ financial supports for patient care;
Tracking financial support to patients for healthcare access;
Tabling at community and stakeholder events;
Promoting Pro-ChoiceYQL’s public image, and act as a resource for advocacy, information and education;
We are looking for candidates with:
Capacity to work variable hours - this position does NOT have set work hours. Daily and weekly hours depend on call and request volume.
Lived experience / work experience / post-secondary education (or a combination of) in Sexual and Reproductive Health Care (SRHC) delivery, abortion activism, community organizing, customer service, communications, social work, and/or reproductive justice;
Experience in social support service navigation ;
Computer skills to produce effective spreadsheets, reports, documents and presentations;
An understanding and comfort with issues relating to abortion, reproductive rights and birth control;
Comfortable working in health care environments and with health care providers;
Comfortable following public health orders;
Strong capacity to work independently and autonomously;
Strong english language skills - written and verbal. Other languages - written and verbal, are an asset but not required;
Interest in continuous skills development and learning;
Interested and excited to represent Pro-Choice YQL at public events, festivals, pride events, and conferences;
Working Conditions:
Working hours are flexible and will vary week to week. The minimum weekly work hours: 5, maximum weekly work hours: 15. (The Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Navigator is responsible for staffing the access line. This requires a variable and flexible approach to working hours. Some weeks are quite busy, with 2 - 3 patients a day. Other weeks or days are quiet with only a few patient inquiries);
