Self-Managed Abortion
Also called Medical Abortion, Abortion Pill
Who is this for?
Self-managed abortions are for anyone 6-10 weeks pregnant.
Self-managed abortion is available in Alberta up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, and sometimes later depending on your circumstances.
You do not need a referral, but you will need a valid Alberta Health Care card (or other provincial coverage).
If you do not have coverage, you can still reach out — there are options available, and we can help you navigate them.
Where to get it?
Any doctor or nurse practitioner authorized to prescribe Mifegymiso (the abortion pill)
If you don’t have a provider, we’re here to help—we can provide direct referrals to prescribing medical professionals in your community.
Procedure Overview
Self-managed abortion involves two medications—mifepristone (first dose) and misoprostol (second dose) typically taken over one to two days.
Mifepristone works by blocking the pregnancy hormone
Misoprostol causes uterine contractions to expel pregnancy tissue, similar to experiencing a miscarriage.
This method is safe, highly effective, and widely used for early pregnancy termination.

Remember…
If your Doctor is unwilling to prescribe Mifegymiso and support your access to abortion health care, they are required to refer you to a medical professional or suitable organization that will support your access to abortion health care. It is against medical ethics to refuse abortion health care service without supplying a suitable referral that will support abortion health care access.
