In-Clinic Abortions
Also called procedural or surgical abortion
Who is this for?
In-clinic abortions are for anyone 6-20 weeks pregnant.
In-clinic abortion is available in Alberta up to 20 weeks of pregnancy, and sometimes later depending on your circumstances.
You do not need a referral, but you will need a valid Alberta Health Care card (or other provincial coverage).
If you do not have coverage, you can still reach out — there are options available, and we can help you navigate them.
Where to Go
In-clinic abortions are available in Calgary and Edmonton:
Calgary: Kensington Clinic and AHS Peter Lougheed Centre
Edmonton: Women’s Health Options and Community and Choice
Procedure Overview
There are two types of in-clinic abortion procedures:
Aspiration abortion — usually offered up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. It is a short procedure, done in a clinic setting. The doctor uses a suction tool to empty the uterus.
Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) — typically offered between 14–20+ weeks of pregnancy. This procedure may take more than one day. The cervix is dilated and the doctor empties the uterus.
Both procedures are safe, effective, and provided by experienced medical professionals. You’ll be given pain management options, and after your procedure, you’ll have access to follow-up care to make sure you’re healing well.
Remember…
Pro-Choice YQL can assist with volunteer drivers, gas cards, overnight accommodations, and accessing care without a Healthcare Card.
